2024 Community Shield: Man City beats Man Utd on penalties

Manchester City are champions of the 2024 Community Shield after beating Manchester United via penalties on Saturday at the Wembley Stadium.

Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring for United in the 82nd minute before substitute Bernardo Silva headed in City’s equalizer seven minutes later to force the game to penalties.

The Citizens triumphed 7-6 in the shootout as Jadon Sancho and Johnny Evans missed their kicks.

“We are really pleased to start the season with a title. We lost a lot of balls, after transitions they are one of the best teams in the world. They are so dangerous to control,” Guardiola said.

Responding to the loss, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag noted.

“Tough result to take. When the performance is right, when you lose everyone feels this. It hurts in your stomach.”

“We have to take this belief into the league. We did very good to produce the second goal in the FA Cup final before half-time and weren’t able to do that here.”

The Red Devils face Fulham on Friday at Old Trafford in the Premier League opener while Pep Guardiola’s men begin their title defence at Chelsea on Sunday.
