Rivers United came from behind to defeat Akwa United 2-1 in a massive South-South derby in Matchday 18 of the Nigeria Premier Football League fixture played on Tuesday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port-Harcourt.
Rivers United fell behind in the 7th after Akwa’s Wisdom Ndon silenced the home crowd with the opener.
The Pride of Rivers responded after the early set back by piling pressure on Akwa United defence. The hosts were finally rewarded in the 27th minute as Sadiq Abubakar restored parity to level the score 1-1.
Stanley Eguma’s side continued their dominance in the second half until Abubakar completed his brace in the 73rd minute to give the Port Harcourt-based club a much needed 2-1 victory.
Rivers United will next travel to face Doma United before they square up against Enugu Rangers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu in a rescheduled Matchday 11 fixture.
