AFCON: Injury scare for Sadiq Umar as Peseiro awaits arrival of Iheanacho, Moffi

Real Sociedad forward Sadiq Umar has compounded the strikers’ injury concerns in the Super Eagles ahead of the AFCON.

The Spain-based player failed to train with the rest of the squad yesterday night in Abidjan and had to be attended to by the team’s medical staff, who wrapped one of his legs with a bandage.

Umar reportedly suffered a knock in the AFCON warm-up against Guinea in Dubai on Monday.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has confirmed that Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and OGC Nice star Terem Moffi will join their international teammates in Côte d’Ivoire this coming weekend.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has received permission from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and OGC Nice to include Moffi in the Super Eagles final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Initially named on the 40-man provisional list, Moffi was drafted to the team after Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface was forced to pull out of the squad due to a muscle injury

OGC Nice have delayed Moffi’s trip to Cote d’Ivoire to enable him play in Saturday’s Ligue 1 encounter against Rennes as the player was spotted training with his Nice’s teammates on Wednesday.

According to Peseiro, Iheanacho has been given a clean bill of health from Leicester City’s medical team to join the Super Eagles camp on Saturday January 13th, while Moffi will join the team on Sunday January 14th – the day of Nigeria’s first game against Equatorial Guinea.
