AFCON: Nigeria is one of the favourites. Uzoho is their best goalkeeper – Gernot Rohr

Head coach of the Cheatahs of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr has tipped the Super Eagles of Nigeria as one of the favourites to win this month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire while rating Francis Uzoho as Nigeria’s best goalkeeper.

Rohr, who previously coached the Eagles before he was sacked in December 2021, believes Jose Peseiro’s team has the needed experience to emerge as champions.

“Nigeria is one of the favourites, of course. I saw the list. So many great players and [with] experience,” he said.

There has been criticisms that the current Super Eagles squad lack creativity in midfield ahead of the AFCON tournament.

“The strikers are fantastic. They need stability to be complete. They can find the strikers with direct football. Sometimes, you have to take risks,” Rohr added.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho has been criticised severally for his mistakes that have caused the team several points in recent matches.

However, the Franco-german tactician, who won bronze for Nigeria in 2019 edition in Egypt, said Uzoho is the right choice to man the sticks for the three-time African champions.

“Uzoho can do the job. I don’t know if there is a better one (goalkeeper),” said the former Super Eagles Coach.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be seeking their 4th AFCON title in Cote d’Ivoire having previously won it in 1980,1994 and 2013.

They are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
