AFCON Qualifier: Osimhen Scores Hat Trick As Super Eagles Humilates Sao Tome Again

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Sunday September 10 concluded their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in an impressive fashion with a commanding 6-0 thrashing of Sao Tome and Principe in their final Group A match with Napoli forward and 2023 Ballon d’Or nominee, Victor Osimhen bagging a hat trick.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen who scored 4 goals during the first leg was the hero again as he netted another 3 goals in the encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State.

Osimhen scored the opening goal in the 14th minute following Kelechi Iheanacho’s assist before his fellow Italian Serie A player, Ademola Lookman scored the second goal in the 28th minute to give Jose Peseiro’s team a two-nill lead at half time.

Nottingham Forest of England striker, Taiwo Awoniyi scored the 3rd goal six minute into the second half to make it 3-0 before Osimhen made it 4-0 from the penalty spot on the 70th minute after he was pulled down by the Sao Tome goalkeeper

Osimhen completed his hat trick on the 79th minute, capitalising on an assist from substitute Samuel Chukwueze. Chukwueze also had his name on the score sheet after he converted Victor Boniface’s assist with the goalkeeper at his mercy to make it 6-0.

The victory ensured that the Super Eagles finished their AFCON qualifying campaign as Group A winners with 15 points from six matches woth Guinea-Bissau second with 10 points before they play Sierra Leone on Monday.

It was another embarrassing outing for Sao Tome and Principe as they were whitewashed again by the Super Eagles. The Nigerians humiliated them 10-0 in the reverse fixture last year June in Morocco.

The 2023 AFCON will hold in Cote d’Ivoire in January 2024.
