AFL: Sundowns Defeat Petro Luanda In Angola As Peseiro Sends Goodwill Message To Enyimba

Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa boosted their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the inaugural edition of the African Football League after recording a comfortable 2-0 away victory against Petro Luanda on Saturday evening in the quarter-final first leg in Luanda.

Gilberto squandered a golden opportunity for the home side after missing a penalty on the 43rd minute of the match as Sundown’s goalkeeper, Williams stepped up to save it.

The Angolans were later punished in the second half after Marcelo Allende opened the scoring in the 67th minute for the Brazilians.

Thapelo Maseko secured all three points for Mamelodi Sundowns with a second goal in the 80th minute to finish the game 2-0.

The two teams will meet in Johannesburg, South Africa for the return leg on Tuesday October 24 for a place in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro has sent a goodwill message to Nigeria’s representative in the African Football League, Enyimba ahead of their clash against Wydad Casablanca.

The People’s Elephants welcome the Moroccan giants in the first leg of the quarter-final of the competition on Sunday at the Goodswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state.

The Portuguese tactician sent the message through his social media handle wishing the two-time African champions the best of luck.

“Wishing all the best to Enyimba as they make their debut in the African Football League. Good luck to all the players and staff!”, Peseiro wrote.

Peseiro will be supporting his assistant Finidi George who is the head coach of the reigning Nigeria league champions.
