AFN Finally Drops Amusan, Godson Brume As Ese Brume Headlines Final List For Budapest 2023

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released the final list of athletes that will represent the country in the upcoming 2023 World Athletics Championship in Budapest.

The AFN initially decided to include her name because “we have to submit the list to Budapest latest by midnight Monday. We have included Tobi’s name until AIU decides on her fate,” AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, had earlier stated.

However, the World Champion, Tobi Amusan, will not be at the World Championships in Budapest, according to the final team list released by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

Amusan, will sadly not be at the World Championships following her alleged doping scandal case of missing three tests by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

With her hearing yet to take place and uncertainty on being cleared or guilty before the commencement of the championship, the World Record (WR) holder may likely not be able to defend her women’s 100m Hurdles world title.

Also, the AFN has decided to drop U.S.-based sprinter, Godson Brume, from the list after he announced on his Twitter page on Monday that he needed time to recover from his injury.

The AFN listed home-based stars, Samuel Ogazi and Oke Opeyemi, among the athletes that would carry the nation’s flag in Budapest.

Others on the list include Ese Brume, U.S.-based Favour Ashe, Alaba Akintola, Nathaniel Ezekiel, Rosemary Chukwuma, Ofili Favour, Faith Okwose, Tiana Eyakpobeyen, Uko Imaobong, Patience George, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Ruth Usoro and Success Umukoro.

The competition will run from August 19 to 27. The AFN had earlier planned to unveil Team Nigeria’s list to Budapest at the weekend, but shelved the plan hoping for ‘good news’ to come from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).
