African Footballer of the Year: Double success for Nigeria as Osimhen, Oshoala win awards

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has been crowned the 2023 African Footballer of the Year at the Confederation of African Football (Caf) awards ceremony in Marrakesh.

The Napoli player beat Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi to the prestigious award – the first time a Nigerian has picked up the title since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

Nigeria enjoyed double success with Asisat Oshoala retaining the CAF Women’s Player of the Year for a record sixth time. The forward inspired Barcelona to Champions League glory, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 27 goals across all competitions.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons won the Women’s National Team of the Year with their Paris FC goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie picking up the women’s best goalkeeper award.

The ultimate winners in each category were decided through a voting process involving a panel comprising CAF Technical Committee, Head Coaches, National Team captains and media professionals.
