Nigerian Boxers recorded resounding victories in their different categories of the boxing events at the 13th African Games in Ghana.
On Friday, the last day of boxing action at the Games, the Nigerian contingent won eight gold medals to add to the country’s medal haul.
The boxers recorded victories in eight of the 10 finals they qualified for.
Team Nigeria women boxers clinched five gold medals in their categories, while the men landed three gold medals. Team Nigeria also won two silver medals.
The eight gold medal winners for the women are Jacinta Umunnakwe (81kg), Blessing Oraekwe- women’s (70kg), Cynthia Ogunsemilore (60kg), Patricia Mbata (75kg), and Joy Nene Ojo (57kg).
For the men, the three gold medalists are Ifeanyi Onyekwere (92+kg), Adams Olaore (92kg), and Omole Dolapo -(57kg).
Zainab Adeshina settled for a silver medal after losing 4-1 on points to Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam in the final of the Women’s 50kg bout.
Kareem Shukura also picked up a silver medal as she lost the final of her Women’s 54kg bout 5-0 on points to Morocco’s Bertal Widad, who put on a dominant performance. The teenager was competing at her first African Games and will be glad to have picked up a silver medal on her debut appearance.
As the 13th African Games draw to a close today (Saturday), Team Nigeria maintained their second position on the medals table with 47 gold, 35 silver, and 43 bronze medals.
Egypt remains top with 98 gold, 45 silver, and 42 bronze while South Africa occupies the third spot with 32 gold, 32 silver, and 42 bronze.
