African Games: Nigeria’s Nnamdi Wins Gold In Men’s Javelin

Nigeria’s Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi has clinched a gold medal in the men’s Javelin event at the 13th African Games in Ghana.

He becomes the fourth Nigerian athlete to  after such feat after Anthony Oyakhire (1965), Christian Okemefula (1991), and Pius Bazighe (1995).

Nnamdi won the gold by defeating defending champion and Games record-holder, Julius Yego, while also bettering the National Record (NR) he set two years ago, to a mark of 82.80m, which automatically doubles as a new Personal Best (PB).

That mark also makes him the first Nigerian man to throw over 82m.

The winning distance of the Junior from Baylor University was recorded in his first attempt, while the African Games is his first competition in 2024.

Yego’s mark of 81.74m allowed him to secure the Silver medal while Abdel Khaliq Mostafa of Egypt clinched the Bronze with a mark of 78.10m. Team Nigeria’s Samuel Kure placed 5th with a distance of 76.28m, courtesy of his last attempt.
