Nigeria’s D’Tigers suffered a 69-72 loss to their counterparts and host nation, Angola on Saturday July 15, 2023 in their final 7th-8th classification game at the ongoing FIBA AfroCan tournament in Angola.
Both teams were defeated by Kenya and Tunisia respectively in their previous 5th-6th classification games. Nigeria needed a victory on Saturday to finish 7th on the competition standings with the losing team relegated to the 8th position.
D’Tigers started well and won the first quarter 19-18.
In the second quarter, both teams could not be separated as it was tied 16-16 with D’Tigers taking a one-point cushion to the halftime break.
D’Tigers started out hot in the third quarter, but it turned out to be a 17-16 margin, extending their lead to two points.
In the fourth quarter, Angola turned it up to a 22-17 margin and held on for a three-point victory against D’Tigers.
The result means that the D’Tigers end the 2023 AFROCAN Cup in eighth place following the classification games.
The competition continues on Sunday in Angola with the current Champions, DR Congo playing against Rwanda in the third-place match. The final match will be between Morocco and Ivory Coast later on Sunday evening by 6:30 PM Nigerian time.
