Barr. Green Presents N50m To Victorious Rivers Queens Handball Team, Urges Them To Win In National Sports Festival

Three-time Commissioner of Sports in Rivers state, Barrister Christopher Green, on Monday, presented a cheque of N50m to the newly crowned Nigeria Women’s Handball champions, Rivers Queens Handball team of Port Harcourt.

The Governor of Rivers state, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, had earlier pronounced a cash reward of N50m to the team, while receiving them at the state government House, following their recent triumph of emerging as National Handball champions.

“What I’ll call a very solemn ceremony, that’s the presentation of reward by His Excellency, the executive governor of Rivers state, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS, governor of Rivers state to the all-conquering Rivers Queens Handball Team of Port Harcourt, for your feat. I’ll like to say that, this one is very remarkable as this is the first time ever, the women’s team in handball will go out and win laurels for the state, and so, it is highly commendable.

Another thing of note is that, in terms of team sports, the ball games, this is also the first time the women’s team will go out and win for Rivers state.” Barr. Green pointed out.

“When you presented the Cup the last time to His Excellency, the governor of Rivers state, of course you know that this is one governor that does not joke, he is comprehensive in terms of administration. In every aspect of sports, he is there. He will give you all the encouragement, he will give you all the motivation to make sure that you hit the summit and get to the Zenith of your sporting career.

For you ladies, it is not common to see ladies coming out to doing sports at this level and so, this is one means of motivating you and I know most of you, if not all of you, are bread winners of your families. So His Excellency took all of these into consideration. It is part of him. It is in his DNA to reward excellence, which he has done”. The Rivers state Sports Commissioner noted.

“From today, you’ll start receiving alert of monies accruing from the N50m to your various accounts. And I hope that should serve as a motivation for you to do better than this. We want this team to win in the (National Sports) Festival.

We want to bring more of such women to taking over from you when you get to your peak or when you’re about retiring, so that it will be a continuous project. This time, we are ready for sports in Rivers state. His Excellency is ready because he asks me questions every minute concerning the development of sports “. The former NFF Technical Committee chairman concluded.

While receiving the cheque from the Sports Commissioner, the Director of Sports, Rivers state Ministry of Sports, Mr. Benjamin Akubo, thanked Barr. Green for making it possible for the governor to redeem his promise.

“If I look through the history of Sports Council, my memory may fail me to thinking that any team in quote has stepped out, turned out to be victorious and be received by government, other than the National Sports Festival or other major events and so, I want to say that the Handball team is a lucky team, reason being that, this kind of largese is starting with us”. Akubo stated.

“You’ve made me to look like a lucky person because for the period I am serving, you’ve dragged me for the first time to enter government house.

“Mr. Commissioner, we cannot say much but to thank you, praying that our message of appreciation will also be transmitted to the executive governor of Rivers state.

Now that we are here, it has sent signal to a lot of athletes who abandoned Rivers state after three National Sports Festivals because they have represented Rivers state in those events without an award. Now they have seen that we have a governor that has returned the spirit of giving award.

I’m sure they will apply in writing to come back. So, help us send the message to them that this thing is not a 419, the cheque has been given to us and the money is already moving in spirit into your accounts. Commissioner, thank you once again.” concluded the Director of Sports.

Others present at the event include the chairman Football Club Owners Association of Nigeria, Chief Okey Kpalukwu and the Director of Administration, Rivers state Ministry of Sports.

The event took place at the conference room of the Rivers state Ministry of Sports, Port Harcourt.
