Bayelsa Queens Defeat Rivers Angels To Emerge Champions Of 2023 Federation Cup

Bayelsa Queens have emerged champions of the 2023 Women’s Federation Cup after defeating bitter rivals and eight-time winners of the competition, Rivers Angels through penalty shoot-outs ọn Wednesday afternoon June 21, in the final played at Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

After an uneventful first half from both teams, the second half became much lively but no side was able to get a goal as the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Bayelsa Queens won the encounter 4-2 via penalty shootouts to lift the trophy after the Jewels of Rivers converted only two out of four kicks.

Chiamaka Okuchukwu skied her effort for the Angels, while her teammate, Agyaakwa Sofia had her spot kick saved by Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper, Onyinyechukwu Okeke.

It is back-to-back triumph for the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League Bronze winners.

The Restoration Girls who failed to defend their 2023 Nigeria Women’s Football League NWFL will be consoled with their Federation Cup victory.

They have now defeated their Rivers Angels four times in their South-South derby meetings this year.

Commissioner of Sports in Bayelsa, Daniel Igali dedicated the victory to the members of the supporters club who died in auto crash in Kwale while coming to Asaba for the finals of the Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six about two weeks ago.

Igali urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to go beyond the finals of the FA cup by making sure that the winners book a ticket for continental competition.

The Bayelsa ladies were awarded the sum of N10 million naira while Rivers Angels get the sum of N5 million naira as runners-up.
