CAF CC: Rivers Utd’s Aim Is To Beat APC Lobito With Our Fans – Eguma

Rivers United coach, Stanley Eguma has disclosed that his team’s aim is to win their opening Group C game of the CAF Confederation Cup, while calling on fans to cheer them to victory.

The Pride of Rivers on Sunday will trade tackles with Angolan club, Académica do Lobito in their first group game of the 2033-23 CAF Confederation Cup at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Rivers United will be hoping to go further in this season’s competition, having been knocked out at the quarter stage of the last edition by Young Africans of Tanzania.

“Every coach’s ambition is to improve from the past performances. Last season, we got to the quarter-final and I think that this season, we should be aiming ahead of the quarter-final”. Eguma noted during a press conference on Saturday.

“It’s one reason why we need to work above our capacity to ensure we achieve that. It’s not an individual expectation but a team ambition. Considering the fact that we are representing Nigeria and all the hopes of the country is on us, we’ve to do better.”

The former Nigeria league champions will welcome their visitors in Uyo, away from their home ground, and will need the support of their fans during the encounter.

“We don’t want to play like ophans. We want our fans, not just in Rivers state, but in Uyo and all over Nigeria, to troop down to the stadium and cheer us to victory. I’m sure we’re not going to let them down.

“Every team has their fortress. Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium has been our fortress but as long as we have a good edifice here in Uyo where we have played in the past and won games, we’re comfortable.” The CAF-licenced tactician

Eguma said they are not under pressure, even so, they are not underrating their opponents.

“We aim to win but we are not underrating our opponent because for them to have gotten to this stage means they’re a strong side.

“We respect them but our utmost aim is to win the game.

“We are not under pressure, we can’t write them off because they are debutant.

“We’ve prepared very well to ensure that we beat every opposition”, the Rivers United gaffer concluded.

Academica has played four games in the league this season and has lost just once.

That loss, however, came on match day two when they suffered a 0-1 reverse to União de Malanje at Estádio 1º de Maio (Malanje) on November 4.
