Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent, Rivers United, has been eliminated from this year’s CAF Confederations Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat and 2-1 aggregate loss to defending champions Union Sportive de la Medina d’Alger.
The Pride of Rivers had a slender 1-0 advantage after their victory at the Godswil Apkabio International Stadium in Uyo in the quarter-final first leg, but failed to hold their own against the North Africans in a late night encounter at the Stade du Julliet Stadium.
Malian forward Abdullah Kanou emerged as the hero for the Algerian side, netting both goals in the 37th and 74th minute to extinguish any hopes of a Rivers United comeback.
With the feat, Union Sportive de la Medina d’ Alger will now continue the quest to defend their title as they face Moroccan club Renaissance Sportive de Berkane in one of the semifinal pairings later this month.
Rivers United will now shift attention to Nigeria premier league.
