CAF Confed Cup: Rivers United Face Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante, Bendel Insurance Battle Morroco’s RSB Berkane

Following the exits of Enyimba FC and Remo Stars from the CAF Champions League, football enthusiasts have immediately switched attention to the CAF Confederation Cup where former NPFL champions Rivers United and reigning Nigeria Federation Cup winners Bendel Insurance will be representing the county.

Rivers United Football Club wil square up against Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Port Harcourt-based side earned a bye in the first preliminary round of the competition, setting the stage for their upcoming challenge.

Etoile Filante secured qualification to the next round on away goals rule over Casa Sports Ziguinchor of Senegal.

The Burkinabé side played out a 1-1 draw away in Senegal against their Senegalese counterparts in the first leg of the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Etoile Filante then advanced to the next round following a nail-biting 0-0 draw against Senegal’s Casa Sports Ziguinchor at the AU Stade De La Paix De Bouake in Cote D’Ivoire on August 27.

The first leg of the clash is set to be played on September 15th, 2023 in Burkina Faso, while the return fixture will be played on September 29 in Nigeria.

Rivers United were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of last season’s CAF Confederation Cup by Young Africans of Tanzania. The Tanzanian side emerged victorious with a 2-0 aggregate win to secure passage to the semi-final of the competition.

The Pride of Rivers had a major setback in the first leg as they lost by two goals to nothing at home, before playing out a goalless draw in the return leg held at the Benjamin Nkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Meanwhile Bendel Insurance of Benin will trade tackles against RSB Berkane of Morocco in another second leg preliminary round encounter of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Bendel Insurance progressed to the next round after defeating Algeria’s AS Olympic Chlef 4-3 on penalties on Saturday August 26 in Algiers.

The Benin Arsenal lost 1-0 in regulation time, bringing the aggregate score to 1-1 having beaten the North Africans with the same score line last week in Benin City. The match went straight into penalty kick where the Nigeria Federation Cup winners triumphed 4-3.

Morocco’s RSB Berkane are 2022 CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Super Cup winners.

The first leg will be played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin city on the weekend of September 15th, 2023 while the return fixture will be played on the weekend of September 29 in Morocco.
