Rivers United edged past defending champions USM Alger of Algeria 1-0 in a CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal first leg clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.
Stanley Eguma’s side dominated the game from the blast of the whistle, and finally got the lead within just ten minutes of play.
The decisive goal came from a brilliant move from a corner kick as Sadiq Adamu, rather than cross, sent a nice pass to Augustine Okejepha, who blasted home from outside the box.
After scoring, the home side wasted several other chances to double their lead in the game but had to settle for a 1-0 slim first leg advantage because of their profligacy.
The Pride of Rivers will travel to Algiers next Sunday for the second leg.
Rivers United were eliminated in the same stage of the competition last year by Young Africans of Tanzania.
They are looking to become the first Nigerian club to win the CAF Confederation Cup.
