CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United Suffers 2-1 Defeat Against Ghana’s Dreams FC In Kumasi

Ghanaian FA Cup holders Dreams Football Club registered their first win of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after defeating Nigerian side Rivers United at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday afternoon.

Dreams FC lost their opening game in group B 0-2 against Club Africain of Tunisia but revived their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Rivers United in their second group match.

Dreams FC took the lead in the 35th minute thanks to a strike from experienced striker John Antwi. The former Al Ahly SC and Pyramids FC player brilliantly headed home a cross from defender Eric Boateng with Dreams’ first shot on target.

Rivers United improved their performance after conceding, but failed to get an equalizer as the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the hosts.

Despite a better second half performance from the Pride of Rivers, 18-year-old midfielder Aziz Issah extended the lead for the Ghanaian club in the 74th minute following a brilliant team effort.

The teenage sensation scored again a few minutes later, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Rivers United grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage-time through midfielder Alex Oyowah as the game finished 2-1 in favour of Dreams FC.

Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Club Africain registered a 3-1 away win over Academica do Lobito of Angola, to top the group with six points after two matches.

Dreams FC will travel to Angola to face Academica do Lobito in the next round next Sunday, while Rivers United will next host group leaders Club Africain in Uyo.
