D’Tigers crash out of AfroCan after Q/final loss to DR Congo

Nigeria’s D’Tigers have been knocked out of the 2023 AfroCan championship after losing 72-74 in the quarter finals to the defending champions Democratic Republic of Congo in a fierce contest at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda, Angola, on Thursday.

DR Congo is now through to the semi-final stage of the tournament following their narrow victory over a hard-fighting Nigerian team.

DTigers as the Nigerian side are also known as lost the opening quarter 19-31 and won the last three quarters with small margins which cost them dearly in the game.

DR Congo had an excellent start; racing to a 31-19 lead in the first quarter before the coach Ogoh Daodu-led Nigerian side reduced the deficit, taking the second quarter 18-14. D’Tigers followed up by winning the third and final quarters, 17-14 and 18-15 respectively.

However, despite the strong finish, the damage had been done in the first quarter as Congo squeezed through with a nervy 74-72 points victory.

Kanyinsola Odufuwa was the best performer for Nigeria, with 23 points, five rebounds and one assist.

Chinedu Chimbuo followed with 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists.

The defeat means Nigeria can no longer finish on the podium in the 2023 FIBA AfroCan.

Up next for Nigeria is a consolation 5th-8th classification match against Kenya tomorrow.

The FIBA AfroCan was established in 2019. The competition features only players who ply their trade on the continent.

DR Congo emerged champions in the maiden competition while Nigeria lost all three games they played.

The 2023 AfroCan will end on July 16, 2023.
