D’Tigress To Face Egypt, DR Congo In Group D Of 2023 Women’s AfroBasket

Nigeria’s D’Tigress have been drawn against Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group D of the 2023 women’s Afrobasket championship.

The draw was held in Maputo, Mozambique, on Friday evening June 9th.

D’Tigress, the defending champions, will contend with the Leopards of DR Congo, three-time champions of Africa, and Egypt, two-time Afrobasket winners, in the preliminary stage of the continental competition.

The tournament, it’s 26th edition, is billed to hold at the Kigali Arena, Rwanda, from July 28 to August 6.

D’Tigress have won the last three editions of the Women’s Afrobasket and remain unbeaten in every African competition.

The Nigerian senior women’s national basketball team won the 2017 trophy in Bamako and claimed their second title in Dakar, Senegal, in 2019, before completing the three-peat in Cameroon in 2021.

In Group A, Rwanda, and Angola will face the winner of the Zone 3 qualifying competition.

Cameroon and Mozambique are in Group B, alongside a yet-to-be-named wild card team while Uganda’s Gazelles are in Group C against 11-time champions Senegal, whose most recent triumph was in 2015, and the 2007 champion Mali.

The top team in each group will automatically qualify for the competition’s quarter-final. The next two teams will cross groups and compete in a playoff for a quarter-final position.
