Enyimba Sacks Finidi George And Others After Winning 9th NPL Title, Makes U-Turn On Finidi

Nigeria Premier League, NPL champions, Enyimba FC have sacked their coach Finidi George, all coaches, staff and management of the club barely a month after leading the club to its ninth league title.

Finidi, a Nigeria football legend, won the 2023 NPL title in June after emerging top in the Super 6 Play-off in Lagos.

However, following the appointment of ex international, Kanu Nwankwo as the Supervisor of the club, the new chairman through his Sporting Director, Ifeanyi Ekwueme announced the dissolution of Enyimba FC’s coaching crew, staff and management with immediate effect.

According to a memo from the new Sporting Director, a former Super Eagles midfielder, Enyimba’s coach, the technical crew and other staff must reapply for their positions.

Ekwueme, who acted on behalf of new Chairman, Kanu Nwankwo, gave the parties involved a 48-hour ultimatum.

“The management, staff and technical crew of Enyimba first and second teams are hereby instructed to re-apply for their positions with immediate effect,” the letter stated.

“All application should be submitted to the club TMS manager within 48 hours,” it added.

Meanwhile, Enyimba have debunked reports they have sacked their head coach Finidi George.

The club have however stated that the head coach is exempted from the exercise.

Kanu, who made this known on Monday while reacting to the development from London, described the report as handiwork of negative people trying to create problem in the team.

“It’s not true, it’s negative people trying to put problem. Finidi is the coach and we are working with him”, Kanu stated.

He added that the clubs new Sporting Director who was at the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Club Owners meeting with other clubs asked the members of the technical back room staff to re-apply if they still wish to work with the team, but, only for the negative minded persons to misinterpret the whole report.

Finidi is reportedly negotiating a new contract with the Aba giants.

It remain to be seen whether Finidi’s assistant will be exempted from clean up at the club.

It could be recalled that both Kanu and Finidi were teammates at Ajax when the duo won the 1995 UEFA Champions League.
