FIFA U-20 World Cup: Nigeria Face Host Argentina in Round of 16

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will tackle host country Argentina on Wednesday, May 31 in the Round of 16 of the ongoing U-20 FIFA World Cup, at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario.

Nigeria finished as one of the best third-placed teams with six points, after losing 2-0 to Brazil in their final Group D game. Ladan Bosso’s side scored four goals and conceded three in those three group matches.

Argentina, coached by former Liverpool midfielder,  Javier Mascherano, won all their three group matches against Uzbekistan, New Zealand and Guatemala to finish top of Group A with nine points while scoring ten goals and conceding just one in the process.

The last time Nigeria faced Argentina at the U-20 World Cup was in the final of the 2005 edition in the Netherlands. The South Americans won the match 2-1 courtesy of a brace from Lionel Messi.

Meanwhile, two other African countries have also qualified for the Round of 16 of the FIFA U20 World Cup, in what has become an All Africa vs South America affair.

Tunisia will face Group D winners and five-time champions Brazil on Tuesday May 30. The Gambia will battle it out with another South American side, Uruguay on Thursday June 1.
