FIFA U20 World Cup: Debutants Isreal Stun 5-Time Champions Brazil 3-2, Join Italy To Semis

Israel pulled the biggest upset at the ongoing Under-20 World Cup in Argentina, eliminating tournament favourites and five times winners, Brazil from the competition.

After a goalless first half, Marcos Leonardo scored the opener for Brazil in the 56th minute from the edge of the area, after receiving a through ball from team mate Matheus Martins.

A superb headed strike from Anan Khalaili ensured Israel pulled level just four minutes later.

The match moved into extra-time as both sides played out a 1-1 stalemate after 90 minutes of regular time.

Brazil immediately regained their lead in the 91st minute, a well taken goal from Matheus Nascimento following a brilliant pass from Andrey Santos.

Hamza Shibli equalized again for Israel to make it 2-2 just two minutes later.

The European debutants shockingly took the lead on 105 minutes into extra-time. Dor Turgeman finished his beautiful individual effort with a superb strike from inside the box to make the score 3-2.

Israel missed two penalties within the space of two minutes, but held on to win the match.

Israel will battle the winner of Sunday’s quarterfinal clash between Uruguay and the USA.

In another quarter-final fixture, Italy defeated Colombia 3-1 to advance to their third consecutive U-20 World Cup semifinal.

Cesare Casadei header on 9 monutes opened the scoring for Isreal. Tommaso Baldanzi added a second from close range in the 38th minute before Francesco Esposito increased the tally on 46 minutes to make it 3-0.

Jhojan Torres pulled one back for Colombia in the 49th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1 but it was not enough to trouble the Italian side.

Italy’s will next face the winner of the encounter between Nigeria and South Korea on Sunday, June 4, 2023.
