FIFA U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles Crash Out After 1-0 Loss To South Korea

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have been eliminated from the ongoing 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup after losing 1-0 in extra time to South Korea on Sunday June 4, in their quarterfinal clash at the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

Both sides were unable to break the deadlock throughout 90 minutes.

Nigeria controlled the vast majority of the game — with 61 percent of the possession and 21 shots to Korea’s four but the young Asians trusted their defense to hold off the onslaught and capitalized on the opportunities they created.

Korea finally scored the winning goal just five minutes into extra time after defender Choi Seok-hyun headed home from a corner kick. Ladan Bosso’s boys rallied round after the goal, but failed to find the equalizer.

The victory ensures Korea advance to the semi fnal for the second consecutive U-20 World Cup. At the previous tournament in 2019, the young Taeguk Warriors finished second after losing to Ukraine in the final.

Korea will now face Italy in the semifinals on Thursday June 8. The other semifinal will be between Israel and Uruguay, who knocked out USA.
