FIFA U20 World Cup: Mascherano Tenders Resignation letter after Defeat to Nigeria

Argentina U20 Coach, Javier Mascherano has submitted his letter of resignation to the Argentina Football Association (AFA), following Argentina’s Round of 16 exit by Nigeria’s Flying Eagles at the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition after defeating the host nation, Argentina 2-0 thanks to two second-half goals from Ibrahim Mohammed and Rilwanu Haliru Sarki.

Responding to questions after the match, Mascherano revealed to journalists that he had submitted his letter of resignation to the Leadership of the Argentina Football Association.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder however, hopes to continue in his role as Los Cebollitas coach.

“I have a great relationship with AFA President, Claudio Tapia, and I will continue until he doesn’t want me.

“He has my resignation letter on his desk but my idea is to continue because, I feel I am good enough for this role and as long as they believe the same I will be here.”

Javier Mascherano job has been shaky after Argentina initially failed to qualify for the tournament. The South American nation was granted the rights to host the tournament after Indonesia were stripped of the hosting rights owing to their political issues with Israel.
