FIFA U20 World Cup: Nigeria, Africa’s Only Hope as Uruguay knock out Gambia

Anderson Duarte’s strike from the edge of the penalty area put Uruguay through to the quaterfinals of the Under-20 World Cup after a 1-0 win over The Gambia on Thursday.

Uruguay will face the United States, which beat New Zealand 4-0 on Tuesday, in the quarterfinals on Sunday at the tournament in Argentina.

Both teams lost players to red cards in a hard-fought encounter in Santiago del Estero. Mansour Mbye’s dismissal left Gambia a man down from the 17th minute, while Uruguay’s Luciano Rodriguez was sent off shortly before halftime.

Duarte scored with a low left-footed effort in the 65th minute. Uruguay wasted several opportunities to double their lead against a tired Gambian team that had few chances to equalize.

The winner between Uruguay and USA will play Brazil or Israel in the semifinals.

South Korea beat Ecuador 3-2 later on Thursday in one of the most entertaining matches of the competition and will face Nigeria in the quarterfinals, with the winner playing either Italy or Colombia in the semifinals.
