Former Rivers United Captain Festus Austin Appointed Team Coordinator Of The Club

Former captain of Rivers United, Festus Austin has retired from professional football and have been appointed by the Rivers state government as the General Coordinator of Rivers United FC after a successful career with the club.

The Pride of Rivers made a statement on Monday confirming the appointment of their former captain in his new role.

“We are delighted to announce that Festus Austin has been appointed our new Team Coordinator.

We wish Festus Austin every success as our Team Coordinator.” The club stated

Austin, a dedicated solid centre-back during his active days assumes the new role ahead of the 2023/2024 season having served dutifully as the captain of Rivers United.

After an illustrious career leading on and off the field, a delightful Festus Austin expressed his gratitude to those who made this appointment possible.

The former Rivers United captain however, promised to do more for the Portharcourt-based club.

“Special thanks to His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara – the Governor of Rivers state, former Governor – Nyesom Wike and the Commissioner For Youth & Sports – Barr. Chris Green for the opportunity to serve and I promise to do moreā€¦” – Festus wrote

Festus Austin has finally called time on a glorious playing career, announcing his retirement at the age of 34. Announcing his retirement, he said;

“I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do, and to have had such a long and successful career at Rivers United is a real honour.

“On my new role, I will continue to give my best towards the growth and success of the club.”

Festus, nicknamed “Koboko”, began his career with Paulson Academy in Benin City, Edo State, he then joined Bendel Insurance in 2007 before making a move to Dolphins of Portharcourt in 2008. He was part of the team that won the Nigerian League title in 2011.

With the emergence of Rivers United in 2016, the rugged and dogged defender joined the Pride of Rivers.

Festus lifted Rivers United’s first NPFL title in 2022; and although not playing a major part in the team due to injury, as captain, he was a source of motivation both on and off the field.

He also played for the Nigeria U-17 team and participated in the 2005 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup.

He was part of the Nigeria U-17 at the African U-17 Championship in Gambia.

Festus is now one of Rivers United’s greatest legends, surpassing Ahmed Abdulrahman who played at the club for 14 years.

He is also one of the longest-serving players in Nigeria’s topflight having spent 16 seasons.
