Governor Caleb Mannaseh Mutfwang of Plateau State has held a productive engagement with former Super Eagles’ Captain and ex-Chelsea Midfielder, Mikel Obi, seeking to leverage his expertise and connections for the enhancement of sports in the State.
During the meeting, held in Abuja, Governor Mutfwang urged Mikel Obi, who serves as his Special Adviser, Honorary on Sports, to maintain a connection with Jos, his hometown and the place where he commenced his football career.
The Governor highlighted the need for mechanisms that will identify, nurture, and promote young sports talents from Plateau to be put in place on the global stage, saying Obi has all it takes to make this possible.
Governor Mutfwang expressed appreciation for Mikel Obi’s role as an Ambassador, emphasizing the importance of inspiring the younger generation and expanding their horizons beyond the local realm.
He stated that even those who choose to remain in Plateau can still engage with the global sports community.
“We are delighted to have Mikel Obi as our Ambassador for sports in Plateau. He is a role model for our youths and a global icon in football. We hope his connections and expertise will help us create more opportunities for our talented youths to excel in sports”.
He stressed that his administration aims to provide a supportive environment for individuals like Mikel Obi to feel comfortable returning home and contributing to the advancement of sports.
He expressed the desire to tap into Mikel Obi’s connections and networks to further sports-related initiatives.
Mikel Obi, the former Super Eagles’ Captain, expressed his gratitude for being appointed as Honorary Adviser on Sports and pledged to use his influence to nurture talented young athletes in Plateau.
“I am honored to be appointed as Honorary Adviser on Sports to Governor Mutfwang. Plateau is my home state and where I started my football career. I am passionate about giving back to the community and supporting the development of sports on the Plateau. I will use my experience and network to raise the profile of Plateau sports and empower our youths”.
He also addressed the pressing security situation in the state, urging unity and peace to support the developmental plans of the Mutfwang administration.
