Iheanacho, Dessers praise Finidi’s tactics, gaffer tests new players vs Mali

Kelechi Iheanacho and Cyriel Dessers have hailed interim coach Finidi George for his tactics in their victory over rivals Ghana on Friday.

Finidi led the Super Eagles to a 2-1 win against the Black Stars at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco to ensure Nigeria’s first win over Ghana at senior level in 18 years.

The Eagles played a direct, attacking style of football which was a sharp contrast from the defensive style of football that got Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON where they finished second.

Finidi’s tactics have earned him praises from some of his players.

“He has done a fantastic job within such a short space of time. Hopefully, he will get more chances to prove himself,” Iheanacho said.

Returning forward Dessers, who scored the opening goal of the game believes the coach’s style helped them create more chances.

“He had a clear approach to this game – press aggressive and create more chances in this manner and I think we did that.”

Nigeria will next face the Eagles of Mali in Morocco on Tuesday. However, Finidi has told Nigerians to expect a new set of players in that encounter.

“We are going to see new players. We cannot overload the players. Some will come in, and we will see the areas where they can help,” Finidi said on NFF TV.

The likes of Kenneth Omeruo, Calvin Bassey, Nathan Tella, and Olorunleke Ojo are expected to be in action against the Malians.”
