Libyan authorities leave Super Eagles stranded outside Benghazi

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held hostage by Libyan authorities at the Al-Abaq Airport on Sunday night.

The players and their officials left Nigeria for the North African country on Sunday morning.

According to the Super Eagles media officer, Promise Efoghe, the team’s chartered aircraft was diverted to another city a few minutes before landing in the scheduled city, Benghazi, that will host the return leg match between Libya and Nigeria.

They will now travel by road to Benghazi, the location for the return fixture, which is about a 3-hour, 24-minute drive.

The Libyan players complained of poor treatment by Nigerian authorities on arrival in the West African country last week for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Matchday three encounter.

Nasser Al-Hadiri’s side lost the game 1-0, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring the decisive goal four minutes from time.
