Lobi Stars clash with Abia Warriors shifted to Sunday after robbery attack in Otukpo

The Nigeria Premier Football League NPFL matchday 4 fixture between Lobi Stars and Abia Warriors, initially scheduled for Saturday, October 21 has now been granted a 24hours shift to Sunday, October 22 in response to a tragic robbery incident which recently occurred in Otukpo, a town close to Makurdi – home base of Lobi Stars.

In a press release, the Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi, expressed his condolences and support for both Lobi Stars and the entire community of Benue State.

“Everything and all Officials involved in this fixture, including the crew of our broadcast streaming partners, Propel Sports are on ground in Lafia but this is a huge human tragedy that deserves our sympathy and support, not just for Lobi Stars but the entire people of Benue State”, remarked Davidson Owumi, the Chief Operating Officer of NPFL while announcing the date shift.

“The NPFL commiserates with the families that lost loved ones and the greater people and Government of Benue State on this unfortunate incident”, he further stated.

Owumi disclosed that the League has sought the understanding of the Match Officials and the visiting team, Abia Warriors whose schedule and logistics would directly be impacted by the shift. He added that “all other fixtures will be played as scheduled”.

This leaves only the match in Kaduna between Niger Tornadoes and Bayelsa United as the fixture to hold on Saturday. Lafia will however join seven other fixtures to be played on Sunday with that between Doma United and Enyimba International already postponed due to Enyimba’s involvement in the prestigious Africa Football League (AFL).

According to eyewitnesses, gunmen launched their assault on several banks in Otukpo at approximately 3 pm on Friday, indiscriminately firing their weapons and carting away with an unspecified amount of money.

The robbers, during the operation which lasted for hours, gunned down no fewer than six customers and four policemen, leaving many people seriously injured, according to reports.

Lobi Stars remain undefeated in the NPFL this season after three matches.
