Muscle Injury: Iheanacho Doubtful For AFCON

Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, is a major doubt for the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire after he suffered a muscle injury.

Iheanacho was not included in Leicester City’s matchday squad in their 2-0 away win over Cardiff City on Friday night having picked up a muscle injury in the aftermath of the Foxes 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Boxing Day.

His manager, Enzo Maresca, says the Super Eagles forward is still being assessed but admitted that if the injury proves to be serious, the 27-year-old will not be able to represent Nigeria at the AFCON tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

“Kelechi has a muscle problem two days ago,” Maresca told reporters.

“We are still waiting to see if it’s something important or a matter of days. But I don’t think he will be able for the next one (against Huddersfield).

“We don’t know yet (if it will affect his Afcon call-up). It depends on the injury. If it’s an important injury, he has no chance to go. If it’s not important, he can go.”

That news comes on the day that Iheanacho and Foxes teammate Wilfred Ndidi were named in Jose Peseiro’s 25-man Nigeria squad for the AFCON that kicks off on Saturday January 13, 2024.

With his fitness in doubt, the former Manchester City man could now be replaced in the squad with players like Terem Moffi or Gift Orban, both eyeing a first appearance at the continental showpiece.

Leicester City is expected to miss five players for January and potentially for the first half of February.
