Akwa United secured their place in the semi-finals of the Naija Super 8 tournament after defeating Rivers United 1-0 on Monday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
Rivers United dominated the first half but Akwa United defence managed to withstand the pressure keeping the scores goalless at halftime.
Akwa United forward, Uche Collins opened the scoring for The Promise Keepers in the 57th minute skillfully moving past Rivers United defenders to slot home, after receiving a through pass from his team mate.
Akwa United became the first team to secure a spot in the knockout stage with two wins from two games. Fatai Osho’s side qualified for the Naija Super 8 tournament as one of the wildcard teams alongside Sporting Lagos.
The winner of the Naija Super 8 pre-season competition will receive a prize money of N25 million.
