Naija Super 8: GoalKeeper Howler Gifts Lobi Shock Win Over Rivers Utd As Akwa Utd beat Yobe Stars

Lobi Stars displayed their resilience by coming from behind to secure an emphatic 2-1 victory over former Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Rivers United, in Group B of the Naija Super Eight contest on Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

With Bala Abubakar assuming his first role as Lobi Stars’ coach, Rivers United took the lead in the 32nd minute, following a deflected shot from Liberian forward Albert Korvah to give the Pride of Rivers a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

Lobi Stars pressed for an equalizer from the beginning of the second half and were rewarded in the 71st minute after a half volley from new signing David Okoromi eluding Rivers United goalkeeper Sochima Victor.

Chibuike Charles scored the luckiest goal of his career in the 96th minute after capitalizing on a costly mistake by Sochima, to secure the victory for Lobi Stars .

Earlier in the day, Akwa United made a winning start in the competition after defeating Yobe Desert Stars 2-1 in Group B.

The Promise Keepers broke the deadlock on the 34th minute, as Chikwuebuka Anthony headed home his first goal for Akwa United since joining from Rangers International, from James Ajako’s corner kick delivery.

Cyril Olisema scored Akwa United’s second on 42 minutes, with a superb finish from outside the box.

Cyril Olisema later failed to convert a penalty kick awarded to Fatai Osho’s side in the 51st minute after Salomon Chigoziem was brought down in the box.

Emmanuel James reduced the deficit 2-1 for Yobe Desert Stars on the 55th minute as he sent a low free-kick into the bottom corner of the net of Akwa United’s goalkeeper Jean Afala.

Lobi Stars join Akwa United at the top of Group B, with both teams having three points.

Lobi Stars will take on Yobe Desert Stars in a Matchday 2 fixture on Monday While Rivers United will do battle against Akwa United.
