Sporting Lagos will face Remo Stars in the final of the inaugural edition of Naija Super 8 Football Competition on Sunday July 16 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena Onikan Lagos.
The team of the moment Sporting Lagos came from a goal down to hand Akwa United a 2-1 defeat in Friday’s second semifinal of the tournament to advance to the final.
Akwa United midfielder Cyril Olisema converted from the penalty spot to open the scoring for the Promise Keepers in the 43rd minute of the match.
Saturday Okon equalised for Sporting in the 55th minute after receiving a low cross from a quickly taken free kick from teammate Jonathan Alikwu.
Alikwu made it 2-1 for Sporting in the 70th minute with a powerful header out of nowhere.
Coach Fatai Osho made some changes as Akwa United created some nervy moments in opponents’ goal area. Sporting were a able to absorb all the pressure to emerge victorious.
Earlier on Friday Remo Stars also qualified for the final of the competition following a keenly contested 2-1 victory over Lobi Stars.
Goals from Dela Arkoli and Nduka Junior gave The Sky Blue Stars the victory against Lobi Stars whose striker Joseph Atule’s penalty strike deep into the second half reduced the deficit to set up an anxious finish.
Remo soaked up Lobi’s late pressures to advance to Sunday’s. Remo Stars midfielder Qudus Akanni was awarded the Most Valuable Player for his outstanding performance in the match.
Sunday’s final between Remo and Sporting will kickoff at 5pm inside the Mobolaji Johnson Arena Onikan Lagos after tomorrow’s rest period.
