Enyimba claimed a record ninth Nigeria Premier League title following a 1-1 draw against Rivers United on Sunday June 11 in the final fixture of the NPFL Super Six playoffs at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.
Ekenne Awazie opened the scoring for Enyimba in the 40th minute of the match following a poor clearance from Rivers United defence.
Rivers United fought back to restore parity just three minutes into the second half as captain of the side Nyima Nwagua fired home after a scrabble in Enyimba’s defense set a loose ball to his path following a delightful free kick by Chidiebube Duru.
Both side’s search for a winner proved abortive as the game ended 1-1 with The People’s Elephant emerging champions.
Enyimba will earn a cash prize of N100 million naira as champions and also compete in next season’s CAF Champions League.
Finidi George’s side top the NPFL Super Six playoffs table with nine points from five games.
Remo Stars came second with same points but have an inferior goal difference.
The Sky Blue Stars will compete in the CAF Champions League for the first time.
Rivers United finished in third position and secured a berth in the CAF Confederation Cup.
