NPFL Super Six Playoffs: Holders Rivers United End Insurance 26-Match Unbeaten Run, Top Table After 2-1 Win

Reigning Nigeria champions Rivers United have ended Bendel Insurance 21-match unbeaten league run following a comprehensive 2-1 victory over the Benin Arsenals on Friday June 9th in matchday four’s first match of the Nigeria Professional Football League Super Six playoffs at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

Before the encounter, Insurance were unbeaten in 21 league matches and 26 games across all competitions, this season.

Two late goals in each of the halves by Morice Chukwu and Joseph Onoja ended Insurance’s invincibility in this campaign. Divine Nwachukwu scored a consolation goal for Insurance in the 95th minute, but it was not enough for his side to avoid defeat.

Rivers United move to the top of the NPFL Super Six table with eight points, after two wins and two draws in four matches.

Bendel Insurance remain in fourth position with three points, after three draws and one loss in four games.

Bendel Insurance will next face Remo Stars in the second game of matchday five on Sunday June 11th while Rivers United will be up against Eight-time Nigerian champions Enyimba in the final game of the same day, to wrap up the Super Six competition and determine the 2022-23 NPFL champion.
