Remo Stars became the first Nigerian team to book a slot in next season’s CAF Champions League following their slim 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance on Sunday June 11 in the second fixture of the final day, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.
A 36th minute goal from Qudus Akanni was enough to give Remo Stars all three points against The Benin Arsenal to seal a continental appearance.
The Sky Blue Stars temporarily assume the playoff leader as things stands now with 9 points before the final Super Six Playoffs ecounter between Enyimba FC and Rivers United.
Regardless of the result between Enyimba and Rivers United, Remo Stars in guaranteed 2nd spot in the NPFL Super Six.
Remo’s 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance takes them to top spot with 9pts and goal difference advantage of +3.
Enyimba and Rivers United are tied at 8pts apiece but Enyimba is ahead on goal difference.
As it is, either of Enyimba or Rivers United must win their encounter to guarantee winning the trophy, while the loser picks a CAF Confederation Cup ticket.
If Enyimba and Rivers United draw, then Enyimba wins the league and United comes 3rd.
Rivers United must beat Enyimba to guarantee retaining the trophy and CAF Champions League ticket.
