Rivers United gaffer Stanley Eguma has attributed Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Sunshine Stars to tactics.
Rivers United defeated Sunshine Stars 1-0 in the second fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League Super Six playoffs at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
“Well, first and foremost I commend the two teams for the efforts they put in. We’ve played Sunshine two times in the past and we know their character. We know their game so we had to make some tactical adjustments as we played them today, and that is what gave us victory.
It was a very balanced game. They had their own chances, we also had a lot of chances that we missed but I think at the end of the day, we were better in converting our chances. Because we know they play robust football and their defence is very robust so that’s why we put in Gibson.
Gibson plays a very subtle football and he has a lot of skills to destroy a defence and that’s exactly what played out today. To fetch us the penalty that brought the goal. So it was a tactical plan for us to win this match today but Sunshine played good football but we were more tactical”. Coach Eguma revealed.
The Rivers United boss also emphasised that his team will face each team with a different approach and will not underrate any opponent.
“Every team is strong. It’s not yet time for us to celebrate. We’re taking the matches as they come, one after the other. We cannot actually decide now that there is no strong team.
Each team has a different tactics, you can never tell. Sunshine cannot be Enyimba, cannot be Insurance so as they come, we bring out our tactical plans so I think today’s own is gone and we got the three points. We’ll go back to the drawing board bring another strategy to face our next opponent. Our main point is to pick the three points at stake”.
Rivers United top the standings with three points following their 1-0 win over Sunshine Stars. Their next game is against Remo Stars on Monday June 5, at the same venue.
