Rivers Angels defeated Confluence Queens of Lokoja 2-0 on Sunday June 11 in the 3rd place encounter of the NWFL Super Six tournament at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba, Delta state to secure a Bronze medal.
Rivers Angels came into the game after being fined a million naira and two of their players suspended by the NWFL for assaulting match officials following their 1-0 loss to Bayelsa Queens.
The first half of the match ended in a goalless draw despite a dominant performance from the Port Harcourt side.
Adaobi Okah capitalized on a poor clearance from the defence of Confluence Queens to open the scoring for Rivers Angels in the 61st minute, tapping into an empty net after receiving a pass from teammate Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.
Substitute Ikekhua Oghenebrume doubled the lead in the 68th minute 2-0, sealing the victory for the Jewels of Rivers.
Rivers Angels will also go home with the sum of N3 million naira prize money.
An elated Rivers Angels coach, Edwin Okon commended his team for the win while acknowledging the strength of their opponent.
“I am happy with the victory, a win is a win and we will take it, regardless of the opposition, but there are no small teams in the NWFL anymore, there are no pushovers and any team can beat the other on their day,” said Okon.
Okon also advised the organisers of the women’s league to improve the level of officiating as a way to attract more investors to the league.
