NYG: Team Rivers Continues Impressive Streak In AthIetics On Day 6

Team Rivers continued their impressive performance into Day six of the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

In 400 metres boys final, Team Rivers duo of Michael Aniche (13) and Caleb Daniel (14) finished first and second respectively at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, to clinch gold and silver medals for Rivers state.

Aniche, a student of Western Ahoada County High School, Ahoada, and fellow Rivers boy, Caleb Daniel of Community Secondary School Okochiri, Okrika, began the race slowly, initially maintaining a 4th and 5th position before both outrunning other contestants to cruise to victory.

Meanwhile, in the 400 metres girls, 14-year-old Osinachi Miracle Sunny, also of Community Secondary School, Okochiri came a close second behind her Delta State counterpart to pick the silver.

There are also other medal hopefuls from some athletes who reached the finals of their events in athletics. These include
100 metres boys,
200 metres boys and girls,
4×100 metres boys,
4×400 metres boys and girls,
4×100 metres mixed, 4×400 metres mixed and 800 metres girls.

The team, however survived a medical scare when one of their athletes aged 13, collapsed on the track, while trying to qualify for one of the finals. The athlete was rushed to the hospital and is currently confirmed to be in a stable condition.

Also worthy of mention are the contributions of Team Rivers athletics coaching crew which comprises Omotoye Ayodeji, Blessing Iyo Harrison, veteran Samuel Ojukwu and head coach Micah Michael.

Outside athletics, the other medal hopeful for Rivers State is in the boys baseball where the team will face a stiff opponent in Kwara, in the final at the St Patrick’s Playground, Asaba, by 9am tomorrow.
