Oshoala Wins Second Women’s Champions League With Barcelona

Asisat Oshoala won her second UEFA Women’s Champions League title in three seasons after FC Barcelona Femeni came from behind to defeat Wolfsburg Women 3-2 in the final at the Phillips Stadium, Eindhoven.

FC Barcelona Femeni had reached the final of the competition for the third season in a row after overcoming Chelsea Women in a keenly contested semifinal. Their opponents, Wolfsburg Women, had eliminated Arsenal in the other semifinal.

Hours to the match, the Spanish club announced that Oshoala would not be available for the match as she had picked up an injury to her left hamstring.

Having lost the final to Olympique Lyonnais Women last year, the Spanish champions looked like they were going down the same route when striker Ewa Pajor opened the scoring for the Germans after only three minutes and German legend Alexandra Popp doubled their lead in the 37th minute.

FC Barcelona Femeni showed their quality from the first blast of the whistle in the second half and pulled one back just three minutes after the restart through Patrick Guijarro, before the same player drew them level in the 50th minute.

The Spanish side turned the game on its head in the 70th minute when Frida Rolfo found the back of the net to give her side the lead for the first time in the match.

Barcelona held on to win the match and a second UEFA Women’s Champions League title in their history. Oshoala became the first African player to win the tournament on multiple occasions, extending her legacy as one of the greatest African players of all time.
