Victor Osimhen has been nominated for 2023 FIFA The Best Men’s Player of the Year award following an impressive season for both club and country.
The Super Eagles forward was named in a 12-man shortlist for the award alongside other European stars.
Osimhen led Napoli to win the Italian Serie A title for the first time time in 33 years scoring 22 goals in 27 matches. The 24-year-old striker was also the first African Capocannoniere (Serie A top scorer award) and became Africa’s leading scorer in Serie A.
The former Lille man emerged as the top scorer in the 2024 African Cup of Nations qualifiers with 10 goals as Nigeria sealed their ticket to the tournament in grand style topping Group A with 15 points, including a hat-trick against Sao Tome and Principe in the Super Eagles’ last outing.
Osimhen is the only African who was included on the shortlist and is joined by Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Rodri, Julian Alvarez, Marcelo Brozovic, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Declan Rice and Bernardo Silva.
Osimhen was also nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award and African Player of the Year Award for this year.
