Rivers State Coaches Kick Against Salisu Yusuf’s Appointment As Rivers United Advisor

The Executives of the Rivers State Football Coaches Association RSFCA have expressed their dissatisfaction with the appointment of Coach Salisu Yusuf as Advisor to the technical crew of Rivers United Football Club.

The Coaches Association made this known in a Communique issued after an Executive Meeting held on the 7th of December, 2023 at it’s state office at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium and Signed by it’s Vice Chairman, Coach Raphael Akunna and Secretary General, Coach Cyril Levi.

The Association condemned in totality the inclusion of the former Super Eagles assistant coach to the team’s setup since the Stanley Eguma-led Technical Crew have done well with the club.

“No body says the sponsors of Rivers United Football Club should not bring in a Coach for the team but they should have waited till the end of the season to see where Rivers United finishes on the league table.

“You can not shift the goal post in the middle of the game.

“We all know that Rivers United FC have been representing Nigeria at the continent for the past four seasons.

“Coach Eguma Stanley should be allowed to concentrate.” The statement of the Association read.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman Of Rivers State Football Coaches Association, Coach Raphael Akunna said there was no need for bringing in another Coach since the team was doing well and is still playing on the continent. Akunna believes the appointment of Salisu Yusuf is unnecessary and a distraction to the entire Team.

“We just came out of our executive meeting where we were informed that the sponsors of Rivers United Football Club have appointed coach Salisu Yusuf to come and work with the team. We don’t know the capacity of which he is coming to work, but we’re of the opinion that it should not be so because we know the antecedents of coach Salisu Yusuf over the years, how he has been unable to pull-up any of the jobs that has been given to him.” Akunna said.

“Only recently, he took Kano Pillars to relegation, and seeing him in Port Harcourt on the sidelines of Rivers United surprises us because Rivers United has been doing well and they’re the only club on the continent also, they’ve been representing the country for the past four years.

“We feel surprised as an association that such a thing is happening. We’re not saying that nobody should give Salisu a job but courtesy demands that those giving the job should wait and see how the current season ends and see how Rivers United fairs before they can take a decision on the coaching crew of Rivers United.

“As an association, we are backing the technical crew led by coach Stanley Eguma. He has done well and we want the sponsors of the team to give him more time till the end of the season. Moreover, at this period when the club is united and are the only Nigerian representative on the continent, we see this as a distraction and want it to stop, so that the team can concentrate and represent Nigeria very well.

“Let the sponsors allow the team to do their job and see how it ends at the end of the season.” The Vice Chairman of the association concluded.
