Sporting Lagos Seal Promotion To NPL One Year After Creation

Sporting Lagos made a historic achievement on Monday evening as they gained promotion to the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), following a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Abeokuta Stormers in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Eight playoffs tie at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

Ayemwenre Rico and Saturday Okon were the goalscorers for Sporting Lagos which ensured their qualification to Nigeria’s top-flight league, having been created only one year ago in 2022.

The Lagos club began their NNL Super Eight campaign playoffs with a 1-0 victory against FC One Rocket of Uyo on Sunday July 2nd.

Speaking to journalists after the match,  the head coach of Sporting Lagos, Paul Offor, couldn’t hide his excitement about what his team has achieved.

“We’re happy to have qualified, but we know there’s so much work left. We’re preparing for Wednesday’s game against Heartland F.C. We want to win that and move forward to winning the NNL. That’s what we’re focused on now,” Offor assured.

Sporting Lagos will trade tackles with Heartland FC of Owerri in their last Group B match of the playoffs as they look to win their third straight fixture and emerge Champions of the Nigeria National League Super 8 playoffs.

In another South Conference encounter, Heartland Football Club of Owerri moved a step closer to a return to Nigeria’s top-flight following a 1-0 win over FC One Rocket.

The Naze Millionaires need just one point from their next game against Sporting Lagos to secure their return to the Nigeria Premier League.

Meanwhile, FC One Rocket have been eliminated from securing a place in next season’s NPL after losing their opening two matches.
