To Win The Next AFCON, We’ve To Play Our Best Players Everyday – Peseiro Defends 22 Foreign Invitees

Head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Jose Peseiro has defended his list of 22 foreign-based players invited to execute the dead-rubber tie between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Only one NPFL player made the list, Enyimba goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo, despite the fact that the three-time African champions have already secured qualification to the AFCON.

The Portuguese tactician however emphasized that his team must beat São Tomé to win Group A since he believes they are the best side in their group.

“It’s a match we want to win. It’s the last match of our group. Our team is the best in the group and for that, we must finish in first position. For you to finish in first position, you need to win São Tomé. Our team must put in their mind, the goal is win. We’re a better team with good facilities, good condition, good pitch and good good hotel. Ours is to beat São Tomé and play well.” Peseiro said.

When asked why he invited only one home-based player in a match that has little significance to the fate of the Super Eagles, Peseiro says he’s preparing the team for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

“Since the moment I signed this contract, my mind is to win the next AFCON. For we to win the next AFCON, we need to put our best everyday, everytime. Everybody say that we don’t need to win São Tomé or we don’t need to call our best players to beat São Tomé.

But they need to understand that to prepare a team to win the next AFCON, they need time to work. They’ve to work every day, weeks and months. I must call the best players to prepare them and train them, to spend more time to improve our organisation, to improve our spirit, to improve our team. If I do too many changes, I’ll lose.

“If they play together, they bring all the context, all the tactics, all the leadership. If the team must play well, you need to spend more time on the players and train them more times together because São Tomé has nothing to lose. They’ll come here to play carefree with us. Its not just about preparing for this match, but for the next match and the next AFCON.

I invited three new players; Jordan, Orban and Boniface. I don’t make changes too much. I believe in this players, so it’s normal to invite only few new players. Many regulars are out, Moffi, Ahmed (Musa), Omeruo, so the three new invitees are normal.” The Super Eagles gaffer concluded.

The clash between Nigeria and São Tomé and Principe is scheduled to kick off at 5:00pm on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
