Nigeria U20 Women’s national team, the Falconets on Sunday defeated thier host Burundi 1-0 in their first leg of the FIFA U20 Women’s World qualifier at the Azam Stadium Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Janet Akekoromowei who plays for Asisat Oshoala Academy in Lagos gave scored the only goal of the match via a first half penalty kick to give coach Christopher Danjuma’s side all three points.
The Falconets efforts to increase the tally in the second half proved abortive as the Burundian defence did their best not to allow in more goals.
The win puts Nigeria in pole position to qualify for the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, ahead of the second leg which comes up in Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday, January, 20, 2024.
The winner over the two legs will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Colombia later in the year.
The Falconets have qualified for all but one edition since the inception of the competition as FIFA U-19 Women’s Championship back in 2002 in Canada where Nigeria were knocked out in the preliminary stage.
