Wafu B U20 Girls Cup of Nations: Ghana beat Nigeria on penalties to lift trophy

The Black Princesses of Ghana have won the maiden edition of the Wafu B U20 Girls Cup of nations held in Kumasi, Ghana, after defeating Nigeria on penalties in the final on Saturday June 3 at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Ghana who topped group A, sailed their way through to take on the most impressive team of the tournament, Nigeria in the final.

Stella Nyamekye scored the opener for Ghana in the first half from a spot kick, her fourth goal of the tournament, after Comfort Owusu was fouled in the box.

Yusif Basigi’s girls kept pressurising for another goal but all efforts were wasted as the first half ended 1-0 in their favour.

Flourish Sabastine took advantaged of a miscommunication between Ghana’s goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku and her defence to equalize for Nigeria, with just five minutes away from full time.

The host almost regained their lead when Georgina Ayisha Aoyem’s effort came off the crossbar.

The draw meant the game went into penalty shootouts where Ghana’s Afi Amenyaku made three saves from four takes to seal the victory 3-1 for the Balck Princesses with Mary Amponsah scoring the winning penalty.

Burkina Faso came third in the tournament as they defeated Benin 2-1 to win Bronze.

Ghana’s skipper Stella Nyamekye was adjudged as the best player of the tournament as Esther Ajakaye of Nigeria won the top scorer award.
