We Want To Make Rivers State A Sports Hub – Barr. Green Reveals Governor Fubara’s Vision For Sports

The Commissioner of Sports in Rivers state, Barrister Christopher Green has stated that the Rivers state government, under the leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, wants to make the state a hub for sports in Nigeria.

The three-time Sports Commissioner made this known on Monday before presenting the sum of N50 million reward to the Nigeria Women’s Handball champions, Rivers Queens Handball Team of Port Harcourt at the conference room of the state Ministry of Sports.

The money was a redemption made by the governor of the state, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to the state female Handball team, after their recent triumph as Nigeria champions.

“When His Excellency, the governor of Rivers state, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS, assumed office, and when I was appointed as Commissioner of Sports, his charge basically to me is go and revamp sports in Rivers state. Let us get back to what we used to be known in sports in Nigeria.

And so, we had our templates which he himself gave to me, to have the immediate term, middle term and long term goals as a means of revamping sports in Rivers state.” The former Technical Committee chairman of the NFF noted.

“The immediate term is this one that has just happened, by winning, so you’ve done it. We are now going to get on to the middle and long term goals in terms of Handball to ensure that we provide everything necessary for you to not only excel but for us to develop the game of handball in Rivers state.

By the grace of God, we have a few facilities dotted here and there in Rivers state, but again, you need equipment and because of the medium and long term programmes, we’ve to supply you the necessary equipment for you to thrive.

It’s part of the Rivers state government policy which is handed over to me, by His Excellency, that this time around, it’s not football. It’s all about all sports associations, to make sure we bring them to par with football and then hit this country like never before and turn Rivers state into the hub of sports in Nigeria.” disclosed Green.

“As part of the programme of His Excellency, before the end of the year, we’ll begin with the school’s sports. The school’s sports will be a measure of games and athletics, like it used to be in the past. That is the area where we’re going to catch and identify our talents. We catch them, nuture them and groom them to stardom. It starts from there. Like what we did with the Real Madrid Football Academy, between the ages of 9 and 12.

With the school’s sports which will be predominantly competed by secondary school students across the state, it’ll form the bedrock of our sports development in the state. We’re going to also have a state Sports Festival where we’re going to identify athletes that’ll represent Rivers state in the National Sports Festival 2024 in Ogun state.

Apart from that, we also have a system where we’re going to get elite athletes from outside come in and groom our Rivers indigenous athletes from the craddle and at the end of the day, make the best of them for their own betterment, for the society and for their families.” The seasoned sports administrator concluded.
